"What? Right here in the cafeteria? What if she said no. I don't think I could take that kind of rejection."

One of many email rejections I have suffered. Oh the humiliation!

Dear Tim

Thank you for your enquiry. As you suggested, we have visited the website but unfortunately have come to the conclusion that your music would not be suitable for the Chandos catalogue.

I am sorry to have disappointing news for you but would like to take the opportunity to wish you every success with your musical career.

With best wishes.

Mary

Yeah, yeah.... Just say I'm crap and be done with it lady.... ;-)

Don't worry about something like that! You have to remember that not everyone will appeal to your music. I know this myself (even though I don't understand why everyone doesn't absolootely love my music! :p ) because I don't like everything I hear either. Some people can't listen to music that doesn't have lyrics, or others can't listen to music that doesn't have guitars in it, or whatever the case may be. Doesn't mean your music is crap! Just means that it wasn't for them. But you also don't want to ever rule that someone out for rejecting your music this time because they may come back to you should someone else decide to give you some credit. Many in the music industry will only look at something that has been proven. Remember, it is a business and bottom line is the dollars.

Welcome to the long winding road that is barely visible at the best of times!

I know, I'm not really that fussed... It was meant more 'tongue-in-cheek' than anything really... ;-)

Yeah, rejection is life. Why don't ya respond in an Al Pacino "Scarface" lite fashion? "WHAT??????? You cockaroaches!!!!!! I bury you, yes, I bury you! You wanna go to war? I didn't need you in the first place! Who do I trust? ME! Who put this whole thing together???? ME! Fly pigeons!!!!!"
You will have 'em beating down your doors with that approach, mate. That was a disgustingly outrageous attempt at American humour. I can't stop myself!

OH sweeeeeeeeeeeet jesus Bette....you are friggin' hilarious!!!

@Tim: Rejection is part of life and really what gives us our thick skin!! If not, we would be that whiny spoiled brat that got his/her way all our life! A friend of mine made a collage(spelling?) out of all her rejection letters from when she applied for jobs after college!!!!

Well you often hear from musicians that people should be honest with them. But if you are, most of them get extremely bitter and angry with you. In my case I don't comment on musicians I really think are crap, but I comment on musicians I like, but say things like "I love your music, but this special recording/session is crap". Even in such cases musicians get embittered. So no wonder that record companies are careful (companies of any other industry sector are too). If I was a record company AND if there was enough time (but you can be sure NO ONE has sufficient time!!!) I'd talk to artists about in which context / under which conditions their music could be a commercial success, which of course is the basic requirement for any commercial undertaking.

Many years ago, I wrote short fiction, and invariably I would get a little pink or blue post-it note sized slip of paper that read "Thank you for your interest in our publication. Unfortunately, your submission does not meet our needs at this time." It was never the rejection that bothered me; it was the impersonal nature of it. I was actually quite thrilled when the editor of Weird Tales personally wrote me a letter that pretty much bitched me out. Sure it was still a rejection, but at least it was personal.

O, well. Rejection only means you're trying. You don't fail until you quit. Besides which, without scars, what have you got to show? ; )

@ SMA - Now that is a positive attitude, and well said.... I did write back saying thanks for taking the time to listen and replying... As I said earlier, I'm not in the slightest bit bothered, but I am holding out a lot of hope with the BBC who have shown far more interest than everyone else put together. I should have an answer by the end of September... Fingers crossed!!

The question is, what do they want ? What's hot ? If I'm not mistaken in business you sign the best people who make you the most profits. Oh I forgot, they only thinking about short term gains. Does everything has to be crafted for commercial success ? Where's the creativity ? I'm paraphrasing here, this is from the movie " Contact ". " I wish the world we live in was fair. But it isn't . " Response, " I thought the world is what you make of it " .
